Why refurbish your old table?

Restoring an old table has many advantages:

  • Sustainable: reusing existing wood prevents waste.

  • Unique: each table has a personal, customised character.

  • Cost-saving: often cheaper than a completely new table.

  • Sentimental value: you keep memories, but in a new guise.

How does Kas20 turn old into gold?

In this episode we tackled it like this:

  1. The old oak table top was sanded, glued and refinished.

  2. We made block legs from the original wood.

  3. The new blade has a larger format and a modern finish.

  4. Everything was treated with a strong lacquer layer for years of use.

The result? A custom-made dining table that fits perfectly in their renovated home.

Example: Lara and Mats' table

When Lara got home, she still had no idea. Her reaction upon seeing the new table was priceless:

“Wow, that's beautiful... amazing, right?”

The table not only fit the space better, but also became the shining centerpiece of their home .

How much does it cost to renovate a table?

The price of restoring a table depends on:

  • the material (oak, walnut, etc.),

  • the dimensions,

  • the desired finish (lacquer, oil, color),

  • additional adjustments such as new legs.

At Kas20 we always make a personal, tailor-made proposal so that you know exactly what you can expect.

Welcome to Oud naar Goud (Old to Gold), where we're turning an old table into a new one. Today I'm walking around Amsterdam and we're visiting Lara and Mats, who want to turn their old table into a new one. Well, let's go ring the doorbell.

Good morning. Good morning. I'll come pick up your table today, if all goes well. Oh yes, how nice that you're here. Mats, welcome. Come in. Welcome.

What a cool house, man. Thank you. So this is the table in question. Yes, that's the one. Hey. What gave you the idea to sign up for "old to gold"? Well, it's funny you should ask, because when we moved in here, we actually replaced all the furniture. So the couch, the TV stand, we bought new chairs, and actually the only thing in the house that we haven't replaced since I moved in with my wife 6.5 years ago is the dining room table. And she kept nagging me to get a new table. So, and then I saw it. Then I thought, well, I'll respond right away, because, well, let me surprise my wife this time. This is it, the solid oak table by Lara Mats. So, Gijs, the question for you is: Can you still make something of this? Absolutely, I've taken a look at the house. The table is too small, I think. They've renovated everything, of course. Just the table. Unfortunately, we can't make the table any longer. So, I thought, what we're going to do is use beautiful solid oak. We're going to make two nice block legs out of it. Those are, like, square block legs that go on the ends of the tables below and underneath them. Yeah, check. And that ensures you can fit enough chairs between the legs and that you have nice and free space on both sides. I say, let's get started. Let's get started. I'm going to remove the metal strips now for safety. Don't let the mill touch steel, because that's dangerous. The program is in. Earplugs in, and then we'll start milling.

The legs have been milled. They're 4 cm thick, but we're going to make them 6 cm thick to make them a bit sturdier. I found an old tabletop that was milled incorrectly at some point. We'll use this scrap material to make the legs thicker.

Now I'm going to glue both parts and then I'm going to make it from 4 cm to 6 cm.

I've now glued both parts together, and in about 5 minutes I'll glue them together. The panels are dry enough for gluing now. I'm going to glue them together, and then a piece of paper needs to dry.

The two block legs are glued. Now we're going to take them to the sanding department and the brush department. This is the steel plate that goes on top of the block leg to attach it to the table. We're going to... I've already made holes here to attach it to the table, and I'm going to make more holes here to attach the block leg to the steel plate. These are the metal plates again, and we're going to spray them black. And once we've painted the leg, we can attach them.

For the tabletop, we've chosen a rectangular one again. 4 cm thick, because that looks nice with the block legs. The tabletop is made of oak pieces glued together. Now we're going to use the milling machine to make it a straight radius with the beveled edge facing inward.

[Music] I've filled the knots. They're dry now too. I'm going to sand the knots with the sander in a moment. And once that's done, I'll sand the whole table again.

I just sanded the table. So it's ready now, to be painted. I'm going to hose it down first to remove all the dust from the pores here so the paint can adhere properly. I'm going to spray it down later, twice, then sand it in between, and then spray it down again, and then you'll have a fantastic result.

The block legs are glued. We're good now. I filled all the knots this morning, just like I did yesterday with the table. Now I'm going to sand everything smooth and then we'll varnish the legs.

The legs are ready for spraying. I'll give them two coats of varnish, sand them again, and then varnish them again. And then the legs are finished.

[Music] Hey, uh, great, I think it turned out great. Yes, I think it's really beautiful too. And I hope they're happy with it. Well, fantastic. I'm curious. There it is. Yes, definitely. I'm really curious what Lara will think of it. Me too. It's a huge surprise, because she still doesn't know this new table is coming. And uh, yes, she'll be home soon, so I'm really curious what she'll think of it.

Honey, I have a surprise for you. A new table? Yes, a new table. Ooh, exciting. Shall we do it together? Yes. 1 2 3 Wow, this one, how beautiful. Yes. Like this. Wow. Not normal, right? Ah. Done. Uh, we used old parts from your, uh, table. Uh, so what you can see very clearly here, including the table leg. So then you see, uh, you see a slight color difference. Yes. And you can see that this is, among other things, part of your old table. Well, besides that, uh, the table has also gotten bigger. Uh, the table is a lot smaller, right? when we picked it up. Um, you can also see that it fits the room much better. The wish was for it to match the chairs well, and it really turned out well. Did you like this, and do you think my old table could use a makeover too? Send us a message with a photo of your old table, and who knows, we might be at your door next time. [Music]
